Location

Lovina lies on the north coast, some 2.5 to 3 hours from the south over the mountains (a lovely route via Munduk). Thanks to the distance it's quiet and relatively cheap. The sea is calm and the sand is dark.

What to do

The classic is the sunrise dolphin trip — go with an operator that treats the animals respectfully. Beyond that: snorkelling on the house reef, the Banjar hot springs, the Buddhist monastery Brahma Vihara Arama and waterfalls like Gitgit and Aling-Aling nearby.

Peace seekers and families wanting to explore the north, or travellers passing through towards Munduk and West Bali. Less suitable for anyone expecting a beach party or turquoise water.

The dolphins — and an honest take

Lovina's signature is the sunrise dolphin trip: you head out by traditional jukung outrigger just before dawn and, with luck, watch pods of wild dolphins arc through the calm north-coast sea. It's genuinely magical — but it has a downside, because at busy times a scrum of boats can chase the animals. Choose an operator that keeps its distance and cuts the engine, go on a quieter day if you can, and treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a guarantee. The trip is short, so you're back for breakfast with the rest of the day free.

Beyond the beach

Lovina rewards those who linger. Snorkel the house reef straight off the black-sand beach, soak in the jungle-fringed Banjar hot springs, and visit Brahma Vihara Arama, Bali's largest Buddhist monastery, on the hill above. Families love Krisna Funtastic Land water park, and a short drive reaches the Gitgit, Aling-Aling and Sekumpul waterfalls. Evenings are for the night market and a long, quiet sunset over the flat sea. Because it's two-and-a-half to three hours from the south — a beautiful route over the mountains via Munduk — Lovina stays calm and good value, and pairs naturally with Munduk, West Bali and the snorkelling around Menjangan island.
