Uluwatu sits on the Bukit, the dry limestone peninsula at Bali's far southern tip. Here the cliffs plunge tens of metres straight into the ocean, with world-famous surf breaks at their foot and luxury cliffside resorts perched on top. It's more dramatic and more exclusive than the rest of the island.
The vibe is a mix of barefoot surf luxury and high-end: hidden beaches and surf by day, the kecak dance at the temple or cocktails on a clifftop come sunset. Everything here is more spread out than in, say, Canggu, so you'll need transport.

Uluwatu is sprawling and hilly; the highlights — temple, beaches, beach clubs — lie kilometres apart along winding roads. A car with driver or a scooter is all but essential. Expect narrow, steep stairs down to most beaches (Bingin, Padang Padang) and full car parks around sunset. From the airport you're here in 45 to 60 minutes.
The 'Bukit' is the peninsula south of the airport. The best beaches line the west coast: Padang Padang (small and iconic, reached via steps through a rock crevice), Bingin and Impossibles (surf, beach warungs), Suluban / Blue Point (below the cliffs, home to the famous Single Fin bar on the edge) and Balangan. On the south side lie the huge white Melasti Beach and remote Nyang Nyang. The big day clubs (Savaya, Omnia) sit on the cliffs towards Uluwatu Temple. There's no real 'centre' — you hop from spot to spot by scooter, Grab or a driver, so allow 15–30 minutes between beaches.
The beaches are the stars: Padang Padang (small and photogenic), Bingin (surf plus warungs), Melasti (wide, white, with beach clubs) and hidden Suluban or Blue Point beneath the rocks. The surf is world-class but breaks over reef and is often for advanced surfers — beginners are better off at Balangan or with a school. Mind the tides: at high water some beaches all but disappear.
Going out in Uluwatu means sunset on a clifftop. Single Fin (especially on Sundays) is legendary, with live music and surf views; Savaya and Omnia are high-end day clubs with infinity pools, international DJs and steep prices. It's smarter and pricier than Canggu — dress codes and minimum spends do come up. The kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple is an absolute must despite the tourist crowds.
Every evening around sunset, the famous Kecak fire dance is performed at the clifftop temple Pura Luhur Uluwatu — one of Bali's most spectacular experiences. Dozens of men sit in a circle chanting a rhythmic 'cak-cak-cak' (there is no orchestra — the voices are the music) while dancers act out the Ramayana epic: prince Rama, his kidnapped wife Sita, the monkey-god Hanuman and the battle with demon king Ravana. The climax is a real fire scene, and the whole show ends exactly as the sun drops into the ocean. Allow about an hour. Tips: arrive early (it fills up from ~5pm, the show starts around 6pm), buy your ticket in advance, wear a sarong (loaned at the entrance) and beware the cheeky monkeys around the temple — hold on to your glasses, phone and jewellery. Even without the dance the temple is stunning, perched dramatically on a 70-metre cliff.
At Uluwatu Temple, watch out for the cheeky monkeys: they snatch sunglasses, phones and caps, so stash loose items away. The Bukit is dry and has little real 'village heart', so you'll drive a fair way for groceries and variety. Ideal for couples, surfers and anyone wanting to combine luxury with nature; less suitable if you expect everything within walking distance.
