Character and getting around

The resort zone is low-traffic and safe, with a lovely beach promenade that leads you to the Waterblow point. Right next door is Tanjung Benoa, the water sports hub. Everything is neat but at times a little sterile; for local life and variety you drive out, for example to the seafood restaurants of Jimbaran (20 minutes).

The beach is wide, white and calm thanks to the reef — ideal for families. In Tanjung Benoa you can arrange jet ski, parasailing, banana boat and boat trips to Turtle Island. At the Waterblow the waves erupt spectacularly against the cliffs.

Nusa Dua is Bali's manicured resort enclave: a gated zone of big international five-stars, landscaped gardens and a wide, calm, white-sand beach protected by a reef. It's spotless, safe and easy — no traffic to dodge, no hawkers, ideal for families, honeymooners who want to be looked after, and anyone nervous about their first trip to Asia. The flip side is that it can feel a little sterile and detached from everyday Balinese life; for street food, markets and character you drive out. Think of it as a comfortable base to relax between excursions rather than a place to find the "real" Bali on your doorstep.

Day trips from Nusa Dua

You're superbly placed for the south. Next door, Tanjung Benoa is the watersports hub (jet ski, parasailing, banana boat, Turtle Island trips), and the Waterblow puts on a free show as the swell explodes against the cliffs. A short drive reaches the clifftop Uluwatu Temple and its sunset Kecak dance, the giant GWK Cultural Park, the seafood grills on Jimbaran beach, and quieter Bukit beaches like Pandawa and Green Bowl. The airport is only about 20 minutes away, which makes Nusa Dua a painless first or last stop on a Bali itinerary.
