Location and transport

Sanur is easy to navigate and flat, ideal for cycling or walking. The speedboats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan leave here from the beach, which makes Sanur a handy base. The airport or Ubud is a 30- to 45-minute drive; busy Kuta and Seminyak are just around the corner but feel a world away.

Where things are in Sanur

Sanur is long and easy to navigate. Its backbone is Jalan Danau Tamblingan, a pleasant street full of restaurants, cafés, spas and shops running parallel to the beach. Along the coast runs a 5 km car-free beach promenade — perfect for walking or cycling, with calm beaches and sunrise views. To the south is the harbour where the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan depart (the reason many travellers stay here). For families, Icon Bali Mall, Clip 'n Climb and the water park are nearby. Sanur is calm and grown-up: no buzzing nightlife, but plenty of comfort and convenience.

Beach and atmosphere

The offshore reef breaks the waves, so the sea is calm and shallow — great for children and beginner snorkellers. The five-kilometre promenade strings together beach shacks, warungs and hotels. Sanur faces east: get up early for a glorious sunrise over the sea.

Food and quiet

Don't expect buzzing nightlife: Sanur is about relaxed beach restaurants, the odd night market and the famous Italian gelato at Massimo. Perfect if you want a quiet dinner and an early night. For more action, grab a taxi to Seminyak.
