It's ideal as a first or last stop (close to the airport) and for anyone after budget, beginner surf lessons and going out. For peace or authenticity, look elsewhere.

Kuta sits right next to the airport, handy on arrival and departure. It is busy and chaotic, though: narrow streets full of scooters, vendors and traffic. Short distances are often quicker walked than driven. Beware of overpriced taxis without a meter; use Bluebird or a ride app.
The wide beach has long, gentle waves, perfect for your first surf lesson. Waterbom Bali is a big, well-kept water park (one of the best-rated in Asia) and ideal for families. Sunset on the beach is a classic, though it's crowded.
Kuta and neighbouring Legian have the most exuberant — and most affordable — nightlife in Bali: bars, clubs and live music. Shopping ranges from the Beachwalk mall to cheap markets (where haggling is part of the deal). Evenings can be rowdy; not to everyone's taste.
Budget travellers, beginner surfers, families (for Waterbom) and night owls. Less suitable for anyone after peace, luxury or authentic Bali — for them Kuta is mainly a practical stopover.
Kuta is where Bali's tourism began: a legendary surf and backpacker beach that grew into the island's busiest, brashest resort town. It's loud, built-up and, late at night around Legian, can feel rough — this isn't the serene Bali of the brochures. But it's also cheap, endlessly convenient and just minutes from the airport, and the long golden beach still serves up Bali's classic crowded sunset. In the middle of it all, the quiet Bali Bombing Memorial on Jl. Legian remembers the 2002 attacks and is worth a respectful pause. Areas like Seminyak and Canggu have since drawn the style crowd, leaving Kuta as the budget, beginner and family workhorse of the south.
What Kuta does brilliantly is make things easy. The wide beach has long, forgiving waves that are perfect for a first surf lesson, boards and instructors line the sand, and Waterbom Bali — regularly rated among Asia's best water parks — is a guaranteed family day out. Add air-conditioned malls (Beachwalk, Discovery), cheap markets where haggling is half the fun, and every kind of restaurant, and you have a painless base. Because it sits right by the airport and the main roads, Kuta also works as a practical first or last night, or a launch pad for day trips to Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and beyond.
