Kuta runs into Legian to the north and Tuban to the south in one long beach strip, so "where to stay in Kuta" is really about how much buzz you want and how close to the airport. All three are cheap, walkable and on the same great beginner-surf sand. Here's how they compare.
Short answer: Stay in central Kuta for the surf beach, shopping and nightlife on your doorstep; Legian just north for a slightly calmer but still walkable base; or Tuban (South Kuta) for quieter, family-friendly hotels closest to the airport. Central Kuta suits surfers and night-owls; Tuban suits families and quick stopovers.
Central Kuta puts you steps from the beginner-surf beach, the Beachwalk mall, the art market and the Jalan Legian nightlife strip. It's the liveliest, most convenient and cheapest-to-party base — and the noisiest. Ideal if you're here to surf by day and go out at night, and want everything walkable.

2. Legian — a little calmer
Middle ground
Walkable but quieter
Immediately north, Legian shares the same beach and is only a short walk from Kuta's action, but dials down the intensity a notch — a bit more space, slightly nicer mid-range hotels, and an easy stroll to both Kuta and (further up) Seminyak. A good compromise if Kuta proper feels too full-on.
Best for: couples, a calmer base, still walkable
3. Tuban / South Kuta — family & airport

South of the centre toward the airport, Tuban (South Kuta) is quieter and more family-oriented, with bigger resort hotels, Waterbom and Discovery mall close by, and a calmer beach. It's the smart pick for families, for a relaxed stay, or for a first/last night when you want to be minutes from departures.

Is Kuta a good place to stay in Bali?
It's convenient and cheap, on the beginner surf beach and minutes from the airport, with huge choice. It's busy and noisy, so best for surfers, budget travellers, nightlife and first/last nights rather than a quiet getaway.

Among Bali's best value: hostels and simple rooms from about €8–18, comfortable mid-range hotels with a pool around €25–55, and beachfront resorts from roughly €70 up.
Is Kuta or Seminyak better?
