In ten years Canggu has gone from sleepy surf village to the buzzing epicentre of young, creative Bali. Think rice fields slowly giving way to coffee bars, co-working spaces, tattoo shops, concept stores and beach clubs. It's the home base of digital nomads, surfers and Instagrammers: lively, hip and at times a touch overcrowded.
The vibe is laid-back and international: surfing and açaí bowls in the morning, working from a café by day, and sunset cocktails by the sea in the evening. If you're after the real, quiet Bali you're in the wrong place; if you want energy, good food and good company, you're set.

Canggu is notorious for its traffic. The narrow 'gangs' (lanes) and a handful of main roads swallow far too many scooters and cars in high season. At the wrong moment — around sunset, or when the one narrow shortcut bridge is jammed again — a single kilometre by car can easily take 30 to 45 minutes. So allow plenty of time, don't plan dinner too tightly, and get around Canggu itself most cleverly by scooter or on foot. Plenty of locals walk or scooter precisely because a car slows you down here rather than speeding you up.
The nightlife revolves around beach clubs and beach bars. La Brisa, The Lawn and Vault are sunset classics; Finns is the big, busy crowd-puller with pools and slides. In the evening there's everything: live music, DJs, wine bars and a huge choice of (often Western and healthy) food. It's no mega-club scene, but it's fun and, compared to Europe, affordable — though cocktail prices at the well-known clubs do climb.
Batu Bolong and Echo Beach are the best-known beaches: black volcanic sand, good surf for beginners to advanced, and rows of sun loungers. The water can pull strongly here, so watch the flags and preferably surf with a school. Towards Pererenan it gets quieter. Sunset is the moment of the day: half of Canggu gathers on the beach with a beer.
Canggu is at its best in the dry season (April to October), but that's also when it's busiest. If you're coming for peace and quiet, choose Ubud or the east coast; if you're coming for atmosphere, surf, food and meeting people, Canggu is ideal — especially for couples, solo travellers and anyone staying longer. Families with young children sometimes find it a bit busy and chaotic.
