Canggu is Bali at its most now: a strip of surf beaches, beach clubs and rice fields that's become the island's creative, café-fuelled hub. It's young, buzzy and endlessly Instagrammed — but there's real substance under the hype, from world-class beginner surf to some of the best food on the island. Here's everything worth doing.
Canggu is one of the best places in Bali to learn to surf, with forgiving beach breaks and a surf school on every corner. The main beaches:
Beginner-friendly · the main hub
The classic Canggu beach: a mellow, beginner-friendly break, board rental, and the Old Man's bar right on the sand. The heart of the scene.
Intermediate+ · quieter
Punchier reef and beach breaks for more experienced surfers, with a slightly calmer, more local feel just up the coast.
Beach clubs · wide sand
A broad black-sand beach lined with beach clubs — as much about the loungers and DJs as the waves.
Sunset in Canggu is a scene. The big beach clubs — think Finns, La Brisa, and a string of newer spots — offer pools, DJs, cocktails and prime sunset seats (book ahead for weekends). For something cheaper and mellower, grab a bean bag and a Bintang at a beachfront warung and watch the surfers silhouette against the sky.

This might be Canggu's real superpower. The area is packed with excellent cafés — specialty coffee, smoothie bowls, healthy brunches — alongside great Mexican, Italian, Japanese and, of course, local warungs. It's a genuine foodie destination; wandering between cafés is a legitimate activity here. Berawa and Batu Bolong have the densest concentration.
Just north of Canggu, Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most iconic sea temples, sitting on a rock offshore that's cut off at high tide. It's touristy and busy at sunset — but the setting is genuinely spectacular. Go late afternoon and pair it with dinner; it's an easy half-day from Canggu.
