Munduk is a cool mountain landscape in North Bali with waterfalls, coffee plantations and the twin lakes Tamblingan and Buyan. Greener, fresher and quieter than the coast — a relief after the heat of the south.

It's hiking and nature country: jungle waterfalls, misty ridges and the famous lake temple Ulun Danu Beratan. It can get chilly here in the evening, so bring a jumper.

Location and climate

Munduk sits high in the mountains (about 2 to 2.5 hours from South Bali) and is noticeably cooler; expect mist, the odd shower and fresh evenings. The roads are winding but scenic. Munduk combines logically with Lovina on the north coast.

Waterfalls, lakes and temples

The Munduk and Melanting waterfalls and the photogenic Banyumala twin waterfall are within walking distance or a short drive. The twin lakes Tamblingan and Buyan offer quiet canoe trips and viewpoints (Wanagiri). The seemingly floating lake temple Ulun Danu Beratan is one of Bali's best-known sights.

Who for

Nature lovers, hikers and anyone wanting to escape the heat for a while. Less suitable for beach and nightlife travellers.

Waterfall hikes and what to bring

Munduk is Bali's waterfall country. The Munduk and Melanting falls sit on a lovely forest loop you can walk from the village, the twin Banyumala falls are among the prettiest on the island, and the Golden Valley and Red Coral falls reward a little more effort. Trails can be steep, muddy and slippery, so wear proper shoes with grip, set off in the morning before cloud and rain build, and carry water and a little cash for the small entrance fees. It's cool up here, but you'll still work up a sweat on the climbs back up.

A cool-climate mountain base

At around 800 metres, Munduk is refreshingly cool and green — a welcome change from the coastal heat, though it brings mist, the odd shower and genuinely fresh evenings, so pack a light jumper. The hills are stitched with coffee and clove plantations, and the area holds two of Bali's postcard sights: the twin lakes Tamblingan and Buyan (quiet canoe trips and the Wanagiri viewpoints) and the seemingly floating lake temple Ulun Danu Beratan. Two nights lets you slow down and hike; Munduk combines naturally with Lovina on the north coast for a mountains-and-sea loop.
