How it works

There are no motor vehicles: you walk, cycle or take a cidomo. The islands are small — you can cycle around Trawangan in about an hour. Speedboats connect them with Bali (Padang Bai or Sanur, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours) and with Lombok. ATMs are scarce and the sea between the islands can be rough, so plan your crossing for daytime.

Snorkelling, diving and turtles

The underwater life is the draw: snorkel or dive with sea turtles, see the underwater statues off Meno and, if you like, take a dive course in warm, clear water. Boat trips around the three Gilis are popular. Watch the current outside the reef edges.

Atmosphere by island

Trawangan is the liveliest, with beach bars, live music and (modest) parties. Gili Air is quieter and sociable, ideal for couples. Gili Meno is the stillest and most remote, purely for peace. Choose your island by the pace you're after.

Snorkellers, divers, couples and island hoppers. Less suitable for anyone expecting luxury amenities or a hospital around the corner — it stays basic here.
