The Gili Islands are three car-free sand islands between Bali and Lombok, with turquoise water, coral and sea turtles. Trawangan is lively, Air quiet and romantic, Meno remote and still.
There are no cars or scooters — only bicycles and horse carts (cidomo). That makes it wonderfully relaxed. From partying to pure peace: each island has its own atmosphere.

There are no motor vehicles: you walk, cycle or take a cidomo. The islands are small — you can cycle around Trawangan in about an hour. Speedboats connect them with Bali (Padang Bai or Sanur, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours) and with Lombok. ATMs are scarce and the sea between the islands can be rough, so plan your crossing for daytime.
The underwater life is the draw: snorkel or dive with sea turtles, see the underwater statues off Meno and, if you like, take a dive course in warm, clear water. Boat trips around the three Gilis are popular. Watch the current outside the reef edges.
Trawangan is the liveliest, with beach bars, live music and (modest) parties. Gili Air is quieter and sociable, ideal for couples. Gili Meno is the stillest and most remote, purely for peace. Choose your island by the pace you're after.
Snorkellers, divers, couples and island hoppers. Less suitable for anyone expecting luxury amenities or a hospital around the corner — it stays basic here.
The three Gilis lie off the north-west coast of Lombok and are reached by fast boat. Public and tourist speedboats run from Bali — mainly from Serangan/Sanur, Padang Bai and Amed — taking roughly two to three hours depending on the port and sea. From Lombok it's a short hop from Bangsal harbour. There are no cars or motorbikes on any Gili: you get around on foot, by bicycle or in a cidomo (pony cart), which is a big part of the islands' slow charm. Book crossings for daylight hours, as the channel can get choppy, and travel light — everything is carried by hand or bike from the jetty.
Gili Trawangan ("Gili T") is the biggest and liveliest, with beach bars, dive schools and modest nightlife; Gili Air is the sweet spot — laid-back and sociable, great for couples and families; and tiny Gili Meno is the quietest, made for honeymoons and doing nothing at all. A few practicalities: bring enough cash, as ATMs are few and unreliable; healthcare is very basic, so travel insurance matters; the islands are quiet and predominantly Muslim, so cover up away from the beach; and go in the dry season (roughly May to October) for the calmest seas and best snorkelling. The reefs and turtles are the real magic — go early before the day boats arrive.
