Kuta Lombok — the heart of the Mandalika region on the island next door to Bali — is what Bali's south looked like decades ago: a laid-back surf town ringed by some of Indonesia's most beautiful, emptiest beaches. Add world-class waves, a MotoGP circuit and authentic Sasak culture, and it's a brilliant add-on to a Bali trip or a destination in its own right. Here's what to do.
Kuta Lombok is a surf destination first and foremost. Gentle, sandy Selong Belanak is one of Asia's best beginner beaches, with cheap lessons and long, forgiving waves; more experienced surfers head to famous reef breaks like Gerupuk (several spots reached by boat) and the hollow lefts of Mawi. There's a wave for every level, most days of the year.
The coast around Kuta is a string of gorgeous, often near-empty bays. Tanjung Aan has two scoops of pale, peppercorn-textured sand and calm turquoise water; Mawun is a perfect horseshoe cove; and Selong Belanak pairs surf with a long soft beach and warungs. Rent a scooter and spend a day hopping between them.
East of Kuta, the remote Pink Beach (Pantai Tangsi) gets its blush colour from crushed red coral mixing with white sand. It's a bumpy drive or a boat trip away, usually combined with snorkelling stops — a memorable, off-the-beaten-track outing.
The rolling grassy headland of Merese Hill (Bukit Merese), just past Tanjung Aan, offers sweeping 360° views over turquoise bays and rugged cliffs — one of Lombok's best and most romantic sunset spots. An easy short walk up from the car park.

Even outside race weekends you can often visit, do a circuit tour, or simply see the striking waterfront track. Race season transforms sleepy Kuta into a buzzing event hub — book far ahead if you come for it.
Lombok's indigenous Sasak people have a distinct culture. Traditional villages like Sade and Ende near Kuta show thatched, cow-dung-floored houses, ikat weaving and customs still very much alive — a fascinating, respectful cultural stop (go with a local guide).
