Ubud isn't just one place — it's a walkable centre ringed by rice-field villages, and where you base yourself shapes your whole stay. Stay central and you'll walk to the market, restaurants and the Monkey Forest; stay a little out and you'll wake to rice paddies and birdsong, a short ride from town. Best for: walkability, dining, first visits
The heart of it all: Ubud Palace, the art market, Saraswati Temple and the Monkey Forest are all within a stroll, and you're spoiled for restaurants and cafés. It's the most convenient base if you don't want to rely on a driver for everything. The trade-off is traffic and a bit of noise on the main streets (Monkey Forest Road, Jl. Raya) — pick a place set back from the road for quiet.
Best for: relaxed vibe, cafés, value
Just west of the centre and up a famous flight of steps, Penestanan is a leafy, artsy pocket of villas, healthy cafés and yoga — quieter than downtown but still a 10–15 minute walk (or short ride) in. A favourite for longer stays and digital nomads, with great mid-range value.
Best for: valley views, mid-to-upscale
North-west of town along the Campuhan ridge, Sanggingan has boutique hotels and villas with jungle-valley views, good restaurants and the Neka Art Museum. A smart pick if you want scenery and a slightly refined feel without going full luxury.
Best for: honeymoons, luxury, seclusion
West of Ubud above the Ayung River gorge, this is where the famous five-star resorts sit — dramatic infinity pools over the jungle, spas and total seclusion. You'll rely on hotel shuttles or a driver to reach town (10–15 minutes), which is the point: you come here to retreat.
Best for: village calm, rice-terrace views
Nyuh Kuning is a peaceful traditional village just south of the Monkey Forest — walkable to the centre yet calm. Tegallalang, 20 minutes north, puts you among the postcard rice terraces with wonderful views, but you'll want a driver or scooter as it's out of town.
