The caldera-rim viewpoints, the lakeside hot springs, or day-tripping from Ubud — compared.

Kintamani isn't a resort town — it's a caldera. Where you sleep comes down to one question: do you want the view from the rim, the hot springs by the lake, or the comforts of Ubud with a day trip up the mountain? Here's how the options compare.
Short answer: Stay on the caldera rim (Penelokan / Batur village) for the volcano-and-lake view from your room and easy trek pickups; stay lakeside at Toya Bungkah to be beside the hot springs and the foot of the trek; or base in Ubud and day-trip up if you'd rather not sleep in the cold highlands.
The string of hotels and cafés along the rim road around Penelokan trades on one thing: the view. Wake up (or have breakfast) looking straight across the caldera to Mount Batur and its lake. You're also best placed for early sunrise-trek pickups. Rooms range from simple view guesthouses to a few boutique rim lodges.
Best for: the view, sunrise trekkers, photographers

2. Toya Bungkah — lakeside & hot springs
By the water
At the foot of the volcano
Down on the caldera floor by Lake Batur, Toya Bungkah is the village beside the natural hot springs and the usual trailhead for the Batur climb. Staying here means you roll out of bed almost at the start of the trek and can soak afterwards. It's simpler and quieter than the rim, with basic homestays and a few spring-side stays.
Best for: hot-springs lovers, the shortest trek start, quiet
3. Base in Ubud and day-trip
Comfort
Sleep low, visit high
Many travellers don't sleep in Kintamani at all. Ubud is only 1–1.5 hours away, far warmer and vastly better for food, hotels and nightlife. Sunrise-trek operators pick up from Ubud in the small hours, so you can do Batur and be back for lunch. If the cold or the limited dining put you off, this is the easy choice.
Best for: comfort seekers, foodies, those short on time

Is it worth staying overnight in Kintamani?
Worth a night for a caldera-view hotel, a relaxed sunrise start, or the hot springs without a long pre-dawn drive. Many travellers day-trip from Ubud (1–1.5 h), which is also fine.
How cold is it at night in Kintamani?
Cold for Bali — highland nights can drop to around 12–16°C, and Batur's summit is colder before dawn. Rooms often have blankets rather than air-con; bring a warm layer.
Can you do the Batur sunrise trek from Ubud?
Yes — most operators pick up from Ubud around 2–3 am, drive you to the trailhead, and have you back by late morning, so you don't need to sleep in Kintamani.
